I need to start talking explicitly about the difference between the training environment in which they have been working and the work world that they are entering. I need to help Ph.D.s see that their training has prepared them for the work world, but that the final steps are necessarily up to them.

In short: It is time to take charge of your own future, and start thinking strategically about how to make that future what you want it to be.

also need to learn a few more skills — like how to map your past experiences to the requirements of a job posting, how to write a résumé that will catch a hiring manager’s eye in the 20 seconds she takes to skim it, and how to write a cover letter that will help your job prospects, not sink them. And yes, you need to learn how to network effectively.
